Most people, typically, while trying to solve a problem or work out something, are unconsciously referring to their mental model. However, they are unaware of how they actually arrived at the conclusion. Essentially, people who are not consciously looking at it may be having a few models which they rely on for almost everything. Realizing that bigger things will happen at the intersection of these models is a sure way of being smarter, faster. It’s like as building a bigger repository of mental models that will work better.
Arun and Amit had an intriguing discussion, the key points from which are summarized below:
- To make a greater impact on the world, we need to have a latticework of mental models.
- For L&D, it’s crucial to not just think of the knowledge they wish to impart but also what mental models people already have.
- T-shaped skills is a model for L&D too to adopt – Collecting big ideas from other domains, experimenting with them in the context of L&D, and in the process, becoming a greater expert in their domain.
- Some of the best learning happens out of discomfort – Making desirable difficulties and deliberate practice part of the design.
- Compounding of Learning – Just like money, learning compounds too, helping build unique insights and capabilities.
